Sports are organized athletic activities played individually or in teams. Most sports can be played by men and women and boys and girls. Many people participate in sports as amateurs for enjoyment, the love of competition, or as a healthful form of exercise.
Sports give people a lot of benefits. Physically fit people are healthier than those who are unfit. They have greater resistance to disease and recover faster if they become ill. Physically fit people may be happier and more alert and relaxed. They also may be able to resist the effects of aging better than those who are physically unfit. Physically fit people perform their usual tasks easily without tiring and still have energy for other interests.
Sports also provide entertainment for people throughout the world. Large crowds attend sporting events in person. Millions of sports fans also follow their favorite teams and athletes by listening to play-by-play accounts of games on radio or watching competition on television.
School programs help children to develop good physical fitness habits. They offer regular health examinations, courses in health care, and performance tests to measure students' progress in physical fitness. They also provide instruction in running, throwing, and other skills. Children are taught simple exercises in the lower grades and more complicated ones as they mature. Older pupils can participate in such activities as gymnastics, swimming, and team sports. Many schools become recreation and fitness centers during evenings and weekends when the regular classes are not held. Schools can offer sports equipment and such facilities as gyms, playing fields, running tracks, and sometimes swimming pools.
A person's physical fitness is determined by age, heredity, and behavior. Although people cannot control their age or heredity, their behavior can help them to become physically fit and stay that way. Most health experts agree that people should exercise at least three times a week to maintain desirable fitness. Most people are physically unfit simply because they do not get enough exercise. Physical fitness is a personal responsibility.
greed In SportsRecently Michael Jordan wanted to de-certify the union of the NationalBasketball Association, because he felt he could never make what he was "worth"under the current agreement. Michael Jordan had an estimated income of $33million in 1994. Last year, Major League Baseball players went on strikebecause they felt the deal that the owners were proposing was unfair. Theminimum salary for a major league player is $119,000. For the first time inninety years, there was no post-season baseball, and no world series. EricTurner was designated as the Cleveland Browns franchise player.
He thenproceeded to hold out during spring training, because he knew he could get moremoney then his current $2.15 million dollar contract. At one point in everyathletes life, there is nothing they would want to do more than play their sport, not because it fattens their wallet, but because they have a true love for it.At what point does the athlete lose the love and gain the greed? The NBA has become the land of the guaranteed contract. These players wanttheir millions handed to them on a silver platter, no matter what happens. Ifthey get injured and can no longer play; pay up! If they averaged thirty pointsa game in college, but struggle to make the transition into the pros, andaverage only four points; pay up! If their egos swell so much that they are outof control in public and do something to disgrace the organization they playfor; pay up, because the contract guarantees that they get their money. The NFL is a breeding ground for holdout players. I think that Holdout 101,taught by Professor X-Pro Millionaire, is a required class for all profootball players. Rule number one: if you think you can get more moneythan what your contract says, holdout
Learning the plays alone can take most of a player's first season. Beginning this challenge in high school when competition is at an extreme can be very discouraging to new players. The GSL must start up a publicly ran junior high school football team so that it can regain its honor and enter its position as a strong competitor.Improving competitiveness is not the only advantage to beginning a football program two years earlier. Junior high is a time when many young people reach a crossroads between the innocence of elementary school and the complicated choices that come with the independence of high school. These are the years that young people begin making life changing choices in their search to identify who they are in this new world of leaving childhood behind. Many middle schoolers choose paths that do not lead to positive results. Some students during this time begin the illegal use of drugs and alcohol as well as other delinquent behaviors. Sports are a proven deterrent to these types of decisions. Studies reveal the number of athletes that become involved with drugs and alcohol is a significantly lower percentage than that of non-athletes.
Athletes do not have as much free time as non-athletic students so they have less time to get themselves in trouble. Also, in order to be involved in a sport ran by a public school, each individual must sign a contract prohibiting them from being around any illegal substances. This contract proves to be an effective incentive for students to stay away from drugs. Coaches strongly advise early curfews, decreasing the night time temptations. Football teaches self-discipline, teamwork and concern for healthy lifestyles. Coaches expect a lot out of each team member and anyone serious about playing football rises to their expectations.
This produces a more mature student ready to enter high school. When middle schools provide a football program they have an opportunity to redirect children's lives into a path that leads to success. The schools in the GSL need to reevaluate the importance of beginning football programs during the middle school years. A junior high school program would greatly increase the chance of a Spokane school finally being able to beat out the Big 9 schools and win a state championship. School spirit and moral could also be greatly improved.
More importantly, the instituting of a junior high football program could result in giving purpose to a child before negative influences take over his life.
In the early years of football, each team used twenty-five players at a time. In 1873, it was reduced to twenty players, in 1876 to fifteen players, and in 1880 to eleven players, where it has remained. The modern game of football is played on a field 100 yards longs and 53.5 yards wide. Each team defends on end of the field, which is known as an end zone. The end zone is another ten yards added on to the length of the field on each side.
The object of the game is to carry, pass, or kick the ball into the opposing end zone and to score. In the middle of the back of each endzone are goalposts, through where the ball is kicked to score points. This is known as a field goal, which is worth three points. Carrying or passing the ball successfully into the endzone is called a touchdown, which is worth six points. Then, the team has the option to kick for one extra point or to try for a two-point conversion, where the ball is placed three yards from the goal line (two yards in the NFL) and is either carried or passed. If this is accomplished, two more points are added to the team's score.
On defense, turnovers, which include interceptions (when a defensive player catches a pass thrown by the quarterback) and fumble recoveries (when an offensive player drops the ball and it is recovered by a defensive player), can occur and a player runs it back for a touchdown. Also if the defense can stop the offense behind its own goal line, this is known as a safety and is worth two points for the defense. When football is played, the team in possession of the ball is the offense and the team defending its goal against the offense is the defense. Players involved in plays when the ball is being kicked are known as the special teams (this includes punt, punt return, kickoff, kickoff return, field goal, field goal block, and point after touchdown). The eleven players on offense are put into two groups, the seven linemen (offensive line) and four players in the backfield (also known as backs).
The offensive line always consists of five or more players, the center (the person in the middle of the line that hikes the ball to the quarterback) the right guard, the left guard, the right tackle, and the left tackle. The offensive line blocks defenders for passes and runs. There is also usually a tight end or two, but this is optional. There is a quarterback, who either hands of the ball to a halfback of fullback to run with the ball, or passes the to a wide receiver, the player that catches passes (wide receivers are usually in instead of other players such as halfbacks, fullbacks, tight ends, etc.). On defense, there is the defensive line (usually three or four players, the left defensive end, the right defensive end, the left defensive tackle, and the right defensive tackle) that is responsible for stopping the run, but on passing plays they put pressure on the quarterback.
Also on defense, there are three or four linebackers (two outside and one middle), who line up behind the defensive line and stop runs, rush the quarterback, and cover wide receivers. Of course, what the linebackers do depends on the situation at hand. Finally we have the secondary (the group of players who cover receivers) composed of cornerbacks, who cover wide receivers, and safeties, who also cover receivers, but also help to stop the run and rush the quarterback when needed. Usually, the secondary is composed of two cornerbacks and two safeties. To protect themselves from harm, players wear protective equipment on their bodies and heads.
The protective equipment used today differs greatly from the equipment used in the beginning of football. Equipment offers much more protection now than it did a long time ago. In the beginning of the game, football players wore close to nothing for equipment, the shoulder pads were very small along with all the other pads and the helmet was made of leather and it was open faced. Today, helmets have evolved to hard plastic and are equipped with a protective face mask. The shoulder pads are much larger and are also made of plastic and foam, which absorbs much more of the impact. The thigh, hip knee, and tail (commonly known as butt pads) pads are made of foam and prevent the player from injured while being hit in the lower body.
The equipment used today is much more safe than it was in the early days of football and has evolved for the better over the years. Football players today have much less to worry about as far as hurting while getting hit. Football is one of the most popular sports today, and for good reasons. The intensity involved is football is unlike any other sport, and this attracts people to football. The way the game has evolved over the years also intrigues audiences to gather around to watch.
The sports industry today has become a great part of entertainment in the world. Because football is a very large portion of the sports industry, it is very important to many people. Large groups of people dedicate their entire lives to the game of football and without it, the world would be a completely different place. SourcesNew World Encyclopedia 1991.
Games and sports keep one physically and mentally fit. They keep one away from diseases relating to heart, obesity, mental stress an sleeplessness. They instill in the player a spirit of self-confidence, self-reliance, discipline, justice, fair play and patriotism. games provide us with recreation and enjoyment.
Games are very essential for students but they are neglected in schools. Even parents do not have high opinion about games and they want their children to devote more time to studies. India lacks funds, and proper training facilities are not provided to the players. Sports bring rich dividends to sportsmen. The government has formulated a New National Sports Policy. Effective measures should be taken to popularize, and encourage participation in games and sports.
We all are familiar with the maxim 'Health is wealth'. According to the World Health Organization, 'Health is a state of complete physical, the absence of disease.' Academics serve the purpose of nourishing the mind. But a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. One can develop and maintain a healthy body by actively participating in games and sports.
Games keep our body alert, active, youthful and energetic. They instill in us a spirit of adventure. Games increase the circulation of blood, boost metabolism, burn calories and improve the respiration and digestive system. A healthy person can work hard cheerfully for a long period of time, and can face dangers boldly. Games also instill in the players the spirit of self-reliance, self-confidence, justice, and fair play. They enable him to follow other virtues like discipline, honesty, integrity, loyalty and patriotism.
i am a good player. Hence I take part in all the outdoor games. Each one has his own choice. Some like hockey, others like football, while many others consider cricket to be their best game.
The game I like most is football.
Now you can ask me why I prefer football to any other game. It can be easily explained. The main object of all games is to give us some exercise. This is one reason why football is my favorite game.
It helps our body to grow. It brings a sense of discipline and a habit of endurance in us. A good football player is sure to succeed in any walk of life.
He can make himself a great soldier to defend his country. He can be a clever statesman to run the government.
But is there no other game which gives hard exercise? Surely none other except hockey. But hockey carries many risks for the life of a player. It also makes the player quarrelsome. Often he uses his stick as a weapon.
Another reason of my choice is that it is very economical. It does not require costly equipment. A ball and a well leveled ground is all that is required to start our game. And then it is easy to pick up its rules.
We do not require any special coach for it is learn so easily by boys that they begin to play it in a very young age. They dare not to play hockey or cricket.
Like hockey or cricket, football is played by two teams of eleven boys A team consists of five forwards, three half backs, two full backs and one goalkeeper.
The player kicks the ball with his feet. But he may touch it with any other part except with his hands. The goalkeeper, however, can use his hands as well.
A player may be tempted to push an opponent to go far ahead of the ball near the opposite goal. So pushing and off side are regarded as a foul play.
The penalty for a foul is a kick by a player of the opposite team. The fewer fouls you make, the more chances you have to win the game.
The game of football gives us good exercise. We have to keep vigilant and alert. It encourages the team spirit.
games and sports are the parts of healthy life.Everybody likes to play games. Games are the means of entertainment and exercise.exercise is a also a game . when we play the game our body became active .it make us healthy and strong.game improve our growths, maintain our body . it preform the vital role in our life.example of game foodball, badminton, tabletanise, yoga, running, jumping etc.in every work we are doing exercise like when we write it is excersise of hand& fingur,in walking foot exercise of foot.etc, life is also a game because to get happy. when we do one thing it became success it make us happy . so we are unable to leave without game
Many people have indulged in games and have had fun in a good game at some point in their lives. Games primarily exist to provide pleasure as a leisure activity for people of all ages. Today, it is believed that the hectic work schedule of an adult's life has prevented him from indulging in games whether indoor or outdoor. Some of the better known indoor games are board games like chess, while the more popular outdoor games include many sports like soccer, badminton, and tennis.
I feel that games play an essential role in the development of a healthy human being. An example of an indoor game which I think is excellent is chess. Chess is a game enjoyed by many adults today because of the challenge it presents one's mind in his "intelligence' to defeat his opponent. To many people, they feel that "exercising" the mind with the indulgence of the game promotes intelligence in an individual because the game triggers the mind to think and constantly questions his every risky move.
Outdoor games are at least as important in the development of a healthy body as physical activities trigger the body's metabolism to burn excess fat and calories. Studies have shown that people are not susceptible to diseases and subsequently live longer in a regular routine of daily exercise which is very often in the form of games. Popular games like tennis soccer have become many adults' favorites after a long, hard day at work.
In conclusion, there are many advantages in playing games for working adults. While many adults today are finding it difficult to include games in their leisure, it is important to realize the benefits that are accompanied by activities such as playing games. Playing games not only helps relieves stress accumulated from an individual's demanding work life but are also fun to indulge in. It fosters good social relations amongst friends and family members and thus a reason why games are indispensable and should be included in one's lifestyle.
